Spellex Write-Assist for Google Docs and Microsoft Word

Spellex helps you write and read with confidence. It finds the spelling mistakes other spell checkers miss, especially words spelled the way they sound, and reads your writing back to you. It is made for students in college and university, adults at work and medical staff, and for anyone with dyslexia or other reading and writing difficulties.

Spellex is made by Spellex Technologies, LLC, of Tampa, Florida. See www.spellex.com.

What Spellex does

Spellex checks your writing in your own web browser: your documents are not sent to Spellex. Read the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Use.

Spellex Write-Assist for Google Docs

Install it

In a Google Doc, choose Extensions > Add-ons > Get add-ons, search for Spellex Write-Assist and click Install. Google asks you to allow two permissions:

A school or company can install Spellex for all its users from the Google Admin console.

Use it

  1. Open a document and choose Extensions > Spellex Write-Assist > Open Spellex. The Spellex panel opens on the right.
  2. Choose a tool at the top of the panel: Spelling, Homophones, MedXpand, Word Bank, Readability, Definition, Read Aloud, Reading View or Settings.
  3. Check Spelling: click Check Document. Spellex selects each misspelled word in the document and shows its suggestions. Click a suggestion and Change, or Ignore, Ignore All or Add to My Words. Create Spelling Report opens the report as a PDF.
  4. Read Aloud: select some text and click Read Selection, or read the whole document. Choose the voice and the speed in the panel.
  5. Reading View: click Show Document, choose a profile (such as Dyslexia-Friendly Reading) or your own font, size, spacing and color, and Open in a Larger Window to read in a bigger window.

Your settings, your own words and your Word Bank are saved in your Google account, so they follow you to every computer where you use Spellex.

In Google Docs, MedXpand codes are expanded with Expand All Codes and the code finder, not as you type, and Read Aloud says a sentence with Say the Sentence I Just Wrote, not as you type: Google Docs does not tell add-ons what is typed.

Free trial and product key

Spellex is free to try for 15 days from the first time you open it. After the trial, a Spellex product key is required, with a perpetual or an annual license. Buy a key at www.spellex.com or call 1-813-792-7000, then in Settings, under License, type it in Product key and click Activate.

Remove it

Choose Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons, then the menu of Spellex Write-Assist and Uninstall. To also remove its access to your Google account, go to myaccount.google.com/permissions.
